A fine piece of software, for non SP2 users
This software works well, indeed I have been using it for the past few months building up quite a wide file base. Mind you there's the rub, if like most XP users you bow to the inevitable and install Microsoft's SP2 it is unlikely that your program will work. Similarly, ScanSofts OmniPage Pro 14 will also suffer the same fate. Whilst Microsoft Support gives you a link to ScanSoft don't expect to find much, if any help there! If you contact ScanSoft direct, again don't expect too much help there either, you will receive a response of "we know there's a problem and we are working on it". In short, I can not recommend purchase of the above product(s) for the time being. Indeed they will be a waste of money to you if you have already installed Microsoft's SP2. That is of course until the program(s) have been upgraded to accomodate the new SP2 code. Though when that will be nobody seems to know!!
I purchased this product specifically for the manipulation and use of PDF files, which this software claims to support.
It is pathetic !
It comes with Acrobate Reader 4 as standard. Any files which you want to put into PDF format have to be "printed" to PDF and the resulting files are at least 10 times the size of the original.
The only use of this software that I can see is as an automated scanning engine, or as "another" alternative to Explorer. And there are better and cheaper solutions available for these requirements.
I would not recommend this software to a scabby dog !!
Paperport Deluxe 9 - The filing cabinet of my dreams
I have to say, having bought 2 weeks or so ago, this product is slowly revolutionising my life! Bold claim, but frankly it is. I'm a GP, and have spent years simply swamped by documents I knew I needed to keep to reference to, but which straightforward filing didn't seem to address in terms of flexibility/finding again/indexing/etc. This product changes all that. In combination with a fast USB 2 scanner, I can quickly scan in documents, order them in virtual files just like a filing cabinet, but more importantly, search for them under any word in their text - as the search facility/OCR identifies each and every word in the text of each document for searching. I'd prefer a duplex scanner of course where I could feed a whole document in for scanning rather than a page at a time, but this is a hardware issue not a software one. Also, PDF format used is great for sharing and futureproofing my scans, and is not hungry for space for B&W; scans (but is if you scan in colour). Want to organsie your paper life? Buy it.
