An excellent job!
John Rutter's children's opera telling the story of the gunpowder plot is little known, and this is a great shame - he shows off his ability to sustain an excited atmosphere throughout the work, with some beautiful arias along the way.
The performance is second to none. The choir demonstrates their trademark raw and excited tone, but never at any moment unpleasant. This is complemented by excellent diction, and impressive soloists (special mention should be given to Guy Fawkes' outstanding singing).
Finally, the orchestra, under the experienced baton of David Squibb, and made up of ex Trinity pupils, tackles the tricky score with great aptitude - especially the crisp brass playing. Rutter's original use of the harpsichord comes across well in David de Warenne's playing.
In all, this familiar story line, along with the Rutter's creative mind and Squibb's expert direction make for a exciting sunday afternoon in!
