Dark OMen - strategy game of kings!
Where do I start? This game had everything which a great strategy game should. Well designed levels, simple yet engaging controls and a playability way beyond anything expected. Warhammer: Dark Omen is a fantastic game.
You control a mercenary army titled 'Grudgebringers', playing the role of commander Bernhardt. during your campaign you will find yourself pitted against armies of vampires, orcs and goblins all out to destroy your precious army. What particularly endeared the game to me was the fact that after each battle you are payed a certain amount of gold coins, and with these you are able to replenish regiments or buy your soldiers extra armour. If a unit is destroyed in battle it is irretrievable and lost to you - this can be pretty frustrating if you loose a unit you have become particularly fond of (in my case i found myself replaying one mission time and time again in a desperate attempt to save my crossbowmen - tragic, but i love those guys).
Dark Omen can get difficult in places, but the huge number of strategies availably means you can re-play a mission in many different ways, meaning that it takes a long while for the gamer to become bored with the mission - frustrated yes, but never bored.
This game has a great story line, which is carried along well by some fantastic, if somewhat melodramatic voice acting couple with gripping cut scenes. These cut scenes can leave you somewhat attatched to units, and the trolls classic 'leg it' is another reason i liked to try and keep them alive (almost as much as my crossbows).
The variety of units found in dark omen is highlighted by the multiplayer. You are able to create and command an army of humans, undead or greenskins and pit it against foes on the net. This adds excellent longetivity to the game, and you can be assured that you get your moneys worth.
All in all Warhammer: Dark Omen is a superb game. You dont need to have any prior knowledge of the warhammer genre to be able to play ( I didnt), so none games workshop enthusiasts needn't be deterred. Classic characters along with challenging well mapped levels combine well to create one of my all time favourite strategy games. Go get it!
The most challenging and fun game in years
This game does the stratergy genre justice. Its involving storyline, gritty characters and amazing gameplay makes this game stick out from the rest. Based on Gamesworkshops Warhammer World means that you get a wide range of creatures and allowed ot travel around the Old World. It is a huge improvement of its predecessor Shadow of the Horned Rat. Because the interface is easy to use. Be warned though this is a challanging game and each mission needs a good think through before completing it is within site. So if you like a real time strategy game that will not take 5 hours to complete with a huge range of levels and units and a great storyline then BUY THIS GAME!!!!
A game for the cunning army commander
This is an old game that I have had for a while but it is great fun to play. Set in the imaginative Warhammer world you get to play a human commander bossing about regiments of troops on the battlefield against armies of skeletons and other nasties. The controls are fairly nicely designed and the missions are very fun and tactical. Some of my favourite parts are the way you pay to add more men to your army to replace those lost in the previous mission. Also units gain more fighting power as they kill more enemies and become experienced. Wizards are brilliant! It's great fun to create meteors above an enemy unit that crashes on it or turn some troops to ice and watch them shatter!
However this game is so incredibly hard towards the end I got really annoyed. I would also suggest that only Warhammer players will truly know how powerful each unit is and how some of the game mechanics work. It's cheap so if you want a challenge and a different style of game then give it a try.
