    1 star1 star1 star1 star1 star    Music for comfort and contentment

Spirituals and gospels have long been associated with jazz, and on this CD the mix creates a comforting atmosphere and a contented state of mind. All the numbers were recorded live in various churches in the UK by Phil Mason and his New Orleans All-Stars. The major star is vocalist Christine Tyrrell but the clapping and singing of church congregations is an integral part and it appears as both spontaneous and sincere.

The CD starts with a rather ragged but appeallingly live instrumental "Sing On", with the next track being the first of 11 magnificant and moving vocals by Christine Tyrrell where she immediately demonstrates her rich gospel voice with minimal backing from the band on "Let God Abide", and followed by "Precious Lord" where the band provides more traditional support and where input from a congregation is first experienced, and it builds up with many other numbers including "Nobody Knows The trouble I've Seen". Christine Tyrrell displays a wide range of talent from rousing numbers such as "We Shall Not Be Moved" and "Over In The Gloryland" to beautiful melodic numbers such as "In The Garden". She adopts a variety of styles with syncopated clapping on "The Storm Is Passong Over", a lilting country approach to "It Is No Secret", a western flavour on "We Shall Walk Through The Streets Of The City", and on "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" her conviction cannot be doubted. All these vocals are superbly performed with great spirit. There is one vocal by trombone player Martin Bennett with a sympathetic version of "Lily Of The Valley". The overall standard of trombone playing throughout the CD deserves particular praise, but all instruments are allowed opportunities, such as the banjo on "When I Move To The Sky". In addition to the first track there are 3 further instrumentals. All the band contribute to an enjoyable version of "Sweet Fields", and a rather out of place but energetic grand finale of "The Saints". However my favourite band performance is a remarkable rendition of "Higher Ground" containing some scintillating clarinet and trombone, and with Phil Mason on trumpet at his best.

These comments embrace all 16 tracks of the CD; all are good; and most are truly great. My personal preference is to play tracks 2 - 15, missing the ragged start and allowing an exit on one of Christine Tyrrell's rousing numbers shared with an appreciative congregation. This is music to escape from cares and to get lost in, it is played and sung from the heart, and as well as entertainment and enjoyment it is music for comfort and uplift.
