I found this book excellent and I did think it had some points not expressed in his other books. The clearest being that if you really desire this gift then the essential element is to desire God for himself not the gift, this book outlined for me the core of humility needed to really hear him.
This book follows on from his first two very good books, 'Surprised by the Power of the Spirit' and 'Surprised by the Voice of God'. In it, Deere outlines the Biblical gift of prohecy, argues for its use today and gives some of his own experiences of the gift.
To my mind he has departed somewhat from the objectivity he displayed in his earlier books seemingly giving more weight to his own experience compared to the superbly balanced arguments of 'Power of the Spirit' especially.
I was disappointed, in that this seemed to be a shorter summary of 'Voice of God'. There was no new argument put forward however, his new experiences of the gift of prophecy did make for interesting reading.
I was expecting this book to be a sequel, which is perhaps why I was disappointed. I would therefore rather recommend the other two books mentioned.
In this book Jack Deere gives a clear picture of what the gift of prophecy is and what it isn't. Also real-life examples are well chosen and interesting. Deere bases his teaching on the Bible.
A Christian who is interested in receiving the gift of prophecy or who already has this gift will find this book very useful. Although this is "the beginner's guide", there is a lot of information for those who already have some information on the gifts of spirit.
