I selected this book on the basis of the star rating given by other reviewers, as this has worked well in the past. However, having read this book I was disappointed. I read it to the bitter end, hoping that I might get to a good bit, or feel something for any of the characters,
But it was not to be. I completed it and felt bored by the whole Judd family. Wouldn't recommend
A big disappointment
I could not get excited about this. The narrative is fairly well written but it drags dreadfully. Nothing really happens. I could sum up (as others have done) the story in a few lines but what else is there?!
Odd but rewarding
An excellent book from a wonderful writer. My only quibble with this odd family is that the character of the mother was so flat. I know there are many women like this one, but she was so much a cipher that her husband's dislike of and irritation with her were all too understandable. The book comes alive when the three siblings, or the vacuous Ana, are onstage, but it goes flat when Daphne or Charles appear, unless their well-drawn friends Clem and Frances are on the scene. At times I was tempted to give up, so boring did I find the parents and their Ju-Ju worship, but the mysteries revealed in the final chapters make it worth sticking with.
