This is a truly great book. Little Owen Meany, after accidently killing his best friend's mum with a baseball, believes he is God's instrument. This has dramatic consequences for both Owen and his best friend John as we follow their lives in New Hampshire. Owen is such a lovable character and when you finish this book you are sure to feel a sense of loss for this extraordinary little fella. A fantastic read, well done Mr Irving. :)
My friend recommended this book. She's always been an avid reader and hoped in the future to become a writer herself. However, she said that after reading it she no longer wanted to pursue that idea because any book she ever wrote would never be as good as A Prayer for Owen Meany. Having just finished reading it myself, I understand what she means (not that I don't have any faith in my friend's ability!). It's a true literary masterpiece. In meeting Owen I feel I've known and lost a friend - wonderful from beginning to end.
A thoroughly excellent, engrossing read
In my opinion, 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' is definitely the best of John Irvine's books. The intriging story grabs you from the word go, is full of surprises and leads you to a totally original and unpredictable ending. The quality of writing is also a joy; Irvine provides you with the small details of character required to make the book feel alive, but does not let the pace of the book suffer and keeps you hooked to the end. Lots of books promise this on the cover, but rarely deliver. This one is up there for me with the modern day classics.
