One of the first books I ever read at around the same time as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that places it around 1976. It's magical. Forget the comparisons with Lord of the Rings; it stands alone in its own right even though the latter is equally rated and loved. The chapter where Aslan resurrects is a very powerful scene, and the battle reminds me of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana.
I recommend this book because I find it very fascinating to read. It is also very adventurous and full of fantasy. In this book four children that get evacuated from London into a far away country side. Then one of the youngest finds a magical Wardrobe with a never ending back into a snowy land where they meet dwarfs and an evil witch, who takes away there brother and the others go onto an adventure to get him back. This story is great if you like adventure books. If you like this book then I recommend Harry potter and the chamber of secrets.
I recently bought this book and read it again some 20 years after I first read it. I'm now 30 years old and I have to say for a children's book this is still magical to read even as an adult.
Reading through it again I remembered how it made me feel as a child when Lucy stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia right to the end with great characters such as Aslan, the four children and Mr Tumnus.
Definitely worth buying if you have young children who love to read.
